ISLAND OF KRAPANJ
The island Krapanj is the smallest and most densely populated island of the Sibenik archipelago. It is situated only 300m far from the mainland in the near of Brodarica. Its area is only 0.36km2, it is the lowest island on the Croatian Adriatic - 1.5m above sea level.
History of the island starts in 1435 when it belonged to the church but was bought out from it by the Juric family. In the 15th century island become home of many refugees who escaped from the Turkish invaders. The first inhabitant's main occupation was agriculture, fishing and sponge diving. It makes the island famous of the sponge. Even now some people still diving for it. On the trade you can buy some of it. Besides, you can find here beautiful stone houses with the narrow streets. The cordial hosts in their family houses will be offered local gastronomic speciality.
